What exactly is counselling?
Counselling is a way of exploring things by talking to a person trained to listen and help you work out ways to resolve whatever it is that troubles you.
It is not about being given advice or told what to do. I will help you help you sort things out in your own mind and start to work through them whatever they are.
I give my clients a safe place to sit quietly and talk without fear of judgement. If you are a couple you may need help time and space to talk to each other. I can provide this. Then we can start to work on dealing with what is troubling you. I can ensure you are both listened to and both have the opportunity to express your feelings and views.
What about psychosexual therapy?
I realise that sex is sometimes one of the most difficult areas for couples to discuss. I am a fully qualified Relate trained psychosexual therapist and relationship counsellor. Whatever the problem I can help you both to address it. If you are coming with a specific sexual worry then psychosexual therapy will be offered and this differs from counselling. It involves a detailed assessment of the problem and then we agree how best to deal with it. I will be giving you information and education and setting tasks to complete at home. In this kind of therapy I will be giving advice and instruction so it is quite different to counselling.
Sometimes a relationship is over and you may need help working on the best ending together in particular if there are children involved and I can support you in this. You may need help telling your partner your feelings have changed or you may be trying to come to terms with relationship break up that has been imposed on you. Whatever is your particular situation counselling can help explore the impact and find a way through it.
Counselling is there to deal with a range of issues not just to do with relationships. It may be coming to terms with a different kind of loss such as a bereavement, redundancy or retirement. Life changes are often very stressful and confusing and I am trained to help with this. Low self esteem and lack of confidence along with depression can all result from what life throws at us.
Stress and anxiety seem part of life nowadays but you may need help to cope when it becomes too much. Using CBT and other specific techniques I can teach practical ways to cope and feel better.
A traumatice experience can be something that is hard to forget leaving you with panic attacks, nightmares or flashbacks. EMDR ( eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing ) is a specific form of therapy that helps you to process the event or experience and thus remove the distressing symptoms you may be having. It is NICE approved within the NHS and widely used in our Armed Forces and is well researched and shown to be effective. Sessions last longer for this type of therapy - one and a half hours.
I believe counselling is a good way of getting in touch with our own strengths and our own answers to our problems. It helps you find your way if the path seems a bit hard to find! Deep down most of us know what to do but often life can seem confusing or overwhelming and we need the opportunity to refect and explore. I can provide this and an impartial but caring ear. Together we can navigate the way and find the right one for you.
